There’s no denying that Richard Stipl’s work is eerie, at times even gory. He takes realism to an extreme with his figures, but whilst they are anatomically correct down to the slightest detail, there is something not quite human about them. I find the contrast between the beauty of his craftsmanship and the often disgusting nature of his subjects interesting, although as I’m sure most of you know, I don’t feel there’s any need for vulgarity in art. One thing I do find fascinating about Stipl’s work, however, is that every time he re-exhibits older work, he re-works and reconfigures it, recognising the sheer power of the specificity of the site.
